Pepper Spray: History, effects, and antidote
Pepper Spray is derived from chili pepper. It is diluted with a percentage of water ranging from 5% to 15% and is mixed with propellants and UV dye, which is for police protection. Some pepper spray products are also mixed with tear gas for more effectiveness and dramatic effect (as is causing extreme tearing of the eye). The main ingredient (that is taken from the chilipepper) is called O.C. This is a known inflammatory agent that causes temporary distress to the mucous membranes (whichare located primarily in the eyes , nose, and mouth). Because of this, when using pepper spray it is important to aim at the face and theeyes of the attacker. As it is sprayed their eyes will shut as they sting and tear. They will also cough and gasp for air. Othereffects are nausea, temporary blindness, and a burning sensation on affected skin. Normally, these effects will wear off within45 minutes or so and will not cause permanent damage. Obviously, pepper spray should only be used if you feel threatened or feel as if your life could be in danger. It is a crime to usepepper spray maliciously or for your own personal gain. As stated, when used in the correct circumstances, the predator willnot be permanently injured and the effects will gradually wear off. However, what happens if you accidentally spray yourselfor someone by mistake. For this reason there is an antidote. Now the antidote is not a quick solve for the accidental pepper spray problem, but it will minimize the effects. The most effective treatment is a combination of milk, honey, mild detergent, and baking soda. This combination will help to soothe the area and does remove some of the chemical. Baby shampoo can be used on the skin or hair to expel oily resin which also contains chemical. Also, if spray directly in the eyes, continue to blink to allow tears to form and the chemical will slowly be released through the tears. Pepper Spray is legal in all 50 states, but the laws may vary from state to state and even city to city. It is a good idea to check the state and local laws or even with the police department near you before purchasing or using pepper spray. If used in the correct capacity pepper spray is the perfect defense mechanism to carry with you on a day to day basis. It is small enoughto fit in your pocket, but has a big enough effect to save your life.
