The Technology Behind Video Conference

If you are running a multibillion dollar corporation, and you have offices and branches in so many countries around the world, then you surely understand the importance of video conferencing. Let us say, your headquarters is based at New York City, and you have offices in France, England, Japan, and Hong Kong. There are inevitable times when you would have to meet with the department heads of each office in each country. But today's businesses do not really have the luxury of time for flying from one location to another. And your business is not an exception to this. So, how do you go about meeting all of these department heads? Two words: Video Conference.

Not too long ago, the ability to conduct video conferences belonged to just the bigger companies. However, this technology is no longer just a luxury that only huge companies can take advantage of. This is because the costs of video conferencing, from the technology to the software needed, are decreasing fast. Thus, just about any company can enjoy the benefits of video conferencing today.

In its most basic, video conferencing actually permits individuals to communicate with each other effectively, despite the fact that they are thousands upon thousands of miles apart. With the support of video conferencing technology, it would seem that the individuals are just in the same room! At first, only two individuals could take part in this piece of technology. But today's systems can connect many participants across many places in real time! And the number of participants does not even affect video and audio quality! They remain excellent, as if the participants are still in the same room. Imagine just how much the original system has evolved all the way back to the 1970's.

But how does the technology of video conferencing w
ork? What's important here is that the images and sounds should be relayed in real time. And in order for this to happen, it is very important for the system you're using to handle large amounts of bandwidth. Real-time videos contain so much data, which is way much bandwidth is required. Fortunately, today's video conferencing systems have the technology to compress the data that these real-time videos contain. This compression is very helpful because bandwidth is conserved here, thus, making the relaying of sounds and images in real time highly possible. A codec is actually needed for this compression process to take place. A video codec is a piece of software that does not just compress images and sounds. Rather, the typical video codec can also decompress these.

What the codec actually does is that it samples the data that it receives. This process of sampling is done at certain time intervals, which are usually pegged at fractions of a second. The data is compressed for easier and faster delivery to all the participants in the network. The codec at the receiving end would then reassemble the audio and video input, so that it would be transmitted on a computer or television screen. Bandwidth is conserved when the codec picks out the important images that it receives. These would include the movement of people, significant hand gestures, and the like. The quality of the codec that you would use is vital here because it has a direct relationship with the quality of that your video conference would have.

There are so many things to consider when choosing equipment for your video conference system. There is also the fact that there are different video conference systems that you can choose from. What's important here is then to find that system that would best suit the needs of your business. Compatibility should also be considered here, because the system might have certain requirements that your own system cannot meet.

Once upon a time, the phrase "Video Conference" doesn't even exist. Today, it's becoming a norm.
