You must have heard about the Toastmasters at one time or another. But if you are not sure what the Toastmasters is all about, it is actually an organization dedicated to public speaking. Toastmasters is an international organization that was created to assist people acquire exceptional skills and confidence when speaking in public.
So, if you have problems with public speaking, then you just might be interested in joining Toastmasters. A lot of people who join Toastmasters tend to shy away from situations that would have them speak to anyone in public. Stage fright and public speaking anxiety are common problems amongst these people as well. If you have these problems, then you clearly are not alone. What’s great about Toastmasters is that they actually have a wide array of courses that you can choose from. And these courses are specially designed to tackle specific problems for all people interested in taking them. There are even times when the organizations would have you fly out to the location where training takes place! But with Toastmasters, you do not have to relocation at all. This is because the club meetings of Toastmasters are actually held at local spots. Just look for their location in your area so that you would not have to relocate somewhere just for public speaking training. What’s more, becoming part of this international organization would cost you less than $100 annually. And with that little cost, you are then exposed to such a supportive atmosphere that will definitely help you gain the confidence and public speaking skills you need.
So, what exactly happens in a Toastmasters club meeting? Since each meeting promotes spontaneous thinking and speaking, there would be a primary activity called Table Topics. The participants would be assigned topics that they would speak on. Now, as a beginner, you would undoubtedly find it a bit hard to speak spontaneously on the topic that has been assigned to you. But do not fret because you are in a very supportive and encouraging atmosphere. The participants are there to give you input on how you can become a better speaker. This is because Toastmasters is not just about speaking, but it is also about listening. All of the participants listen to their colleagues deliver their pieces. And the participants look for ways and means on how the piece could be delivered better. There is even what is known as an “Ah” counter, which is responsible for listening for filler words all throughout each piece. These filler words would be tallied and after the speech, the figures are then calculated and presented to the speaker. For your first try, you will definitely have a lot of filler words in your piece. But as you progress in your own pace, you will come to notice how your filler words become fewer and fewer in your pieces. Do not fret if you receive negative comments about your delivery because this is just constructive criticism from your peers.
With Toastmasters, you will experience such development in public speaking. And you will certainly reap the benefits of your progress in just about any facet in your life.
